Default engine speed sensor fault G28

I am having intermittent problems starting my 2004 Audi A8 D3 3.7 V8. I came back from the shops and the car was working fine. When I went to start the car again 30 minutes later, it cranked over but would not fire. Then a few hours later that day, the car started fine again.
This has been happening for a few days now on and off and with my scanner, I see the following code:

Address 01: Engine Labels: None
Part No SW: 4E0 910 560 G HW: 4E0 907 560
Component: 3.7L V8/5V G 0020
Revision: 00000000 Serial number: AUX3Z0C7321355
Coding: 0005773
Shop #: WSC 02313 785 00200
VCID: 254BF5CDECC1386AF3-8070

1 Fault Found:
16706 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
P0322 - 004 - No Signal - Intermittent
Readiness: 0000 1000

looks like my engine speed sensor either needs replacing or cleaning but I cannot find it on the engine. Does anyone have a diagram of where to find it and how to get to it? I have spent a few hours looking for it and did find a sensor that looked similar (0 261 210 246) but not sure if this was the correct one. Is anyone able to tell me if this is it? After cleaning and replacing it, the fault still appears.

Spending few minutes to search here would save those few hours. In case you can't find it, it is screwed into the gearbox in the flywheel area underneath the car.

Also, if you have the fault, outright replace it. Known D3 issue. Stuck in some godforsaken place in who knows what weather, time of day/night and personal safety scenarios with no tools and way home is a bad recipe waiting to happen.

Thanks. Spent a good few hours on here trying to find exactly where it is. Do you know if the sensor I mentioned in the previous post was the sensor or have I found the wrong one?

The part number you posted is not an Audi one. I don't know the # since mine never acted up, but looks like Misha posted it. The number you posted looks like a Bosch # offhand, who could be the OES for the sensor. You could search on line for their part #... Kinda sorta like...Click me And, Presto.

This sounds like a problem I am having

We picked the car up from a audi dealer ship. Started right up. Ran great w/ what sounded like a small exhaust leak. Car has 56k. I scanned for codes showed a P0102 (MASS AIR). Ok no big deal.
200 miles into trip home the car failed to start after a rest stop. Motor cranks over but would not start. Cranking speed seemed normal. Finally it starts runs a bit rough. 200 miles more and we stop for a couple hours. We come back and it cranks but wont start. And the pop up MMI screen goes black then reboots with audi logo. When we try to view settings (battery voltage) the screen goes black again. We leave it couple more hours. We return with a scanner (foxwell). At first it will not link to car. Then I get the same P0102 AND P0329. Try it one more time and it starts runs rough. 200 more miles and we get it home.Wife notes she seen a message on the screen saying radio not installed. Try to start next morning and it will crank about 2 seconds then just stops cranking. No new codes. Screen staying up now. Placed charger on battery over night. Tried next morning same thing. Called dealership and talked to tech. He stated they had started to check car over but it had a voltage problem so they stopped the test and wholesaled it. He said maybe a fuel pump. When its running car has a ton of power, no leg, slightly rough idle and the dang exhaust leak. So what do ya thing. Trying not to just throw parts $$ at it. Thanks for any help

You need a VCDS scan, regular scan tools won't cut it. It sounds like you have multiple faults and a possible water intrusion.

I've previously started a thread on my similar experience, verification and troubleshooting steps as well as the resolution. If you search for it and can find it, you should be good.

The sticky at the top of this thread will help you as well if not better.
