There was a brake light switch error which I thought was very strange and cleared. Perhaps that triggered the ESP fault.

It is highly possible. Change it. It is ~$15 and some kneeling. Well, may be a bit more than some kneeling.

Good heads up. Common early D3 malady that yields a surprising # of problems for its cheap parts price.

Only reason they currently are cheap is due to a couple of recalls and large number being built. As soon as demand drops, they will go up to $50.00 I have a spare ready for next time.

hi all, just hopping on this thread with a similiar issue:

i have been working on a heated steering wheel swap.
i changed out the j527 steering module, i got the part ending in 'B' to accomodate a 4 spoke heated, paddle, and mfsw wheel.

now i get parking brake malfunction error, abs light, esp light
and vagcom does not see the steering angle sensor module.
(i did originally use the new whel with my old ecu and none of these issues (but i didnt get heat do i bought the other 'B' ecu)

as an aside, it seems to recognize my pushing of the heat button
with a 'heated steering wheel on' (and 'off') message.
but there doesnt seem to be heat coming in although the
weather is warm. somehow its linked to the climate settings?
i think i remember that kind of logic in the D2, where the heated wheel was subject to other climate functions.

Have you done something with your steering wheel in the mean time? Steering angle sensor has three harnesses (i believe) and it is easy to miss one of them. Some DeoxIT (or similar) is must on those contacts.

hi again,
my esp/abs/parking brake issue was solved by coding
the ABS module(03) as per vag com, and following the
instructions to calibrate the steering angle sensor.
all codes are clear.

re the heated wheel i have not yet gotten adequate heat
but vag shows no new errors there either.
again i hope it is tied to ambient temps
as its still warm in my garage and in ny.

thanks and regards john.
