I had a TT quattro Roadster when there was a 180 and a 225 HP version (back when it first came out). I had the top of the line with pretty much all of the options - debagded.
I had an A8L when there was no S8, and it got debadged.
My A6 3.2 quattro got debadged.
I simply don't like the badges, that includes engine size, the quattro badge and the model indicator (A6, A8, TT). They all went off the back of my cars, I asked the dealer to remove them before delivery.
It doesn't have anything to do with pretending to have something I had not (in case of the A8L and the TT I had the top of the line vehicles at the time) - I just don't want to show off and I like the cleaner look without the badges.
A good friend of mine has an S4 convertible, with badges - again, top of the line (unless you count the 300 RS4s they brought in last year). The first thing I told him to do is remove the badges - he likes them though, so they are still on. As a result, every boy racer in a riced Civic challenges him and his girlfriend to a race - he's above that, but removing the badges would remove that aggravation as well ...

I have an 08 S8. Drive one and you'll know the answer to "why spend all that money on an S8"
From the engine itself, to the suspension to the B&O. It's an entirely different car, in an entirely different league.

First off, badging your car with something that isn't is a false statement, however you look at it. It'll be funny when someone comes up to you and says: "WOW is that an S8?" and you either say "yes" (a lie) or you say "no it's an A8 with S8 badges" which makes you look foolish. Either way, it's idiotic.
I also don't understand why people choose to modify the grill of their cars. From the guy's pics, the gaps are huge and made his car look fake, hacked. Just live with it, you drive an older version, be glad you have an A8 at all. Why try to "update" the car with aftermarket parts? It'll absolutely hurt the resale value and in the end, you're still driving an older car. You've just spent a few thousand dollars on a mod that any dealer will take a few thousands more off on top of your car's value. Bad move every way you look at it.
I completely understand people debadging their cars, for sakes of being stealthy. I myself display my v10 badges proudly. But debadging is no biggie, you're not lying to anyone.
As for people having issues with boy racers.... please. grow up.

I'm not here to race or compete against an S8. I'm sure it is very very nice. V8 in my car is more then enough for me, I don't have many opportunities to even unleash the power in it. I don't have the money or desire to get a '08 S8 but if I can make small improvements to mine I will.

it became necessary. Seriously, the annoyance from souped up civics and so forth became too much, not to mention dangerous a couple of times. I drive for my pleasure, not for someone else's. (BTW, my other cars have all their badges, and never considered removing them)

I guess I just don't get it....and the comment about "why pay for an S8?" To enjoy it's capabilities obviously....Why act like you have one? For the perceived respect or envy or whatever?
That is all.
As to the boy racers, I smoked one on an on ramp in my real S8 the other day and it was kindof fun. Just don't tell my wife about it.
