Okay, so I removed the two pins holding the front caliper on, but no amount of persuasion with my rubber mallet will free the caliper. Is there something else that has to be done to allow the caliper to be removed?

As long as the guide pins are completely removed, pry the caliper out of the carrier, toward the rear of the car using a big screwdriver or prybar.
