I just warm it up to about 50-60˚c by driving and then spray with sort of powerful bathroom/kitchen cleaner spray, such as http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fairy-Power-.../dp/B0046U8IAE then wipe and brush any very dirty surfaces and thoroughly rinse off with a shower pattern hose (not jet) and then go for a drive to dry it. I also spray it with engine laquer afterwards to seal and protect, but if you do, leave the cover off for a week, or it sticks to the tacky laquer and looks bad.

Go to your local auto store. Go to the section by the oil....not the section with all the car cleaning products.

Pick up some GUNK Engine degreaser and GUNK polish. Both work well. FOllow instructions on back....dont worry about messing anything up. Just dont keep watering sensitive areas and be quick when you rinse.
