Also, on the left of the picture, there is an extra tube running parallel along the left of the right airbox, any idea what this does?

But I'd say a 50 hp hike over stock would require some more serious fettling, as the main reason for the lower HP compared to the Gallardo is the lower rev limit imposed by the added balancer shaft, the torque is fairly consistently higher in relation to the extra displacement across the rev range IIRC.

the S8 engine was designed to be more responsive mid-range, at the expense of peak horsepower. its more fitting for a large sedan that isn't going to spend much time at redline.
don't be so concerned with big numbers.

it might be the same "engine" but its not. Tuned differently to develop power where the driver is going to drive it. Making the usable powerband (4000-6000 rpms) where most of the power is developed the car will be a different animal. If this was a sports car only then the higher the powerband goes the better, but in a 4 door sedan it makes no sense to only have the max output achieved at redline and just below redline since the engine will very rarely see that. It also helps with engine longevity if you dont havt to go to redline to get all the power, in a more mass produced sense like the S8 and other cars that will adopt this engine, lessening the need to go to redline will also help in not having to replace engines because of over rev situations or just engine fatigue.
