Does anyone know if an Audi A6 MMI control unit would fit an Audi A8? Wikipedia says that the MMI is a 'one fits all' unit. I cant seem to find any second hand A8 units but plenty of A6 ones.

I would be more concerned with the coding or SW levels though as they don't share all the same options.
Others may have a more definitive answer.

It sounds like something has been damaged by charging the battery incorrectly. I guess the person you bought it from may have connected a charger directly to the battery and not to the correct ground post above the battery. This will by-pass the power management module and possibly have damaged it.
I would try disconnecting the battery for a while - 10 mins or so and while it disconnected, press the volume **** down for about 10 secs to make sure everything is fully discharged.
Re-connect the battery and see what happens.
Lest you can do is tell the dealer what you were told about the flat battery.

Is that what the diagnosis from the main dealers is?
You could try Listers trade parts supply - http://listers.co.uk/TradeParts
I use them for all parts and they are often cheaper than the aftermarket suppliers like ECP and GS&F.
If you buy outside the dealer network - who will you use to fit it - or will you be able to do it yourself - just a thought?

I had a diagnostics done at a 'Audi specialists' they said the fuses where fine so it must be the unit its self. I have not had an Audi main dealer diagnostics because the specialists have cleared all the fault codes. Audi main dealers quoted £126 for diagnostics and £525 + VAT and labour for an MMI control unit. I have spoken with yet another VAG specialist in Liverpool and they have said that they can fit it if I can get the part. I shall view your link now, thank you.

As this post is the first hit in Google thought I'd share my experience with this issue and its resolution. I too had the issue with the mmi screen stuck up for about six months. Turns out I'd blown a main fuse somewhere near the battery. The tech wasn't there to explain fully. But vag com was showing every component in the media rack was not seeing the optical bus and had no power, except media player 1.
All the blade fuses were fine. Didn't know of the existence of this fuse which the garage reckons was 50amps and the size of a house fuse.
All I was trying to do was swap the analog TV tuner for an Audi hybrid digital one bought for £200 on eBay. Still it was worth it, you get freeview radio as well as freeview tv in surround sound.
