Default MMI Control module saga

So last week my sunroof that never leaks leaked lots of water all over the center console of my 2004 A8. Almost immediately the MMI started acting up from first losing all button control, to doing the 30 second recycle, then dead. Even though it was the center unit that got wet I suspected the control module behind the glove compartment as I had the same symptoms before and replacing that with a used unit from eBay fixed the problem.

I bought a used control unit again ($250, not the $1400 the dealer wants) and put it in behind the glove compartment. Everything works except no sound and the CD is on pause. Fault code of 02095 for component protection activated which is normal when you change the control module according to the threads on this forum. Apparently all I needed to do was take the car to the dealer and have them reflash the module and all will be fine.

So yesterday I took the car to the dealer and they charged me $100 and said they couldn't flash the unit I bought. Suggested I pay the $1400 and $265 to install the new module. When I leave I noticed that now the module is completely dead where as before I had everything but sound. After starting and stopping the car a few times by some miracle everything started to work again. I guess what I learned is that flashing the module may take a while to take effect.

So now I'll get to my question. I think the module came from a different model car because the center screen doesn't go up and down anymore when I power down. Also a lot of little things are different like the accept screen no longer shows on boot up. Do you think there is a coding or adaptation value I can change that will signal the screen to go up and down? I looked through the menus and didn't find anything. Has anyone else upgraded the MMI module and found strange results like this?

I now have this fault code that implies to me I have incorrect coding, I hope I can fix this without going back to the Stealer.

Default wrong MMI control head software

The unit you purchased is for,

2005-2008 A6 Avant Wagon
2009-2012 A6 Avant Wagon
2005-2008 A6 Sedan
2009-2012 A6 Sedan
A6 2005-2011

Part Name: INTERFACE
Part Number:SW: 4F0-910-732-Q

Even though it has a hardware number of 4E0 035 729, it has the software for the A6, and an A6 has no pop up screen, also when you went to the dealer it should not have been for a flash, but for component protection removal, which is not a flash, and what software version did they flash with? if infact they flashed at all, as I have flashed two MMI control heads from The UK from Euro to USA, with three disc MMI update set 4610 using bootloader.

There are many guys around who would be happy if their screen stands always opened. Actually, with some smart rewiring you can be in command of opening and closing. MMI Screen Dream.

Sunroof leak may be the rain tray. My rain tray broke on my d2 and it sometimes leaks. It's on my list of fixes. Dealers are complete morons. They can't solve any problem and their only answer seems to be to just replace everything. These technicians probably aren't even certified mechanics anymore.

Thanks all for your replies, I agree with all of them. I probably did get a A6 module and am stuck with a screen that is always up. For a 9 year old car with 187K it's not the worst thing that could happen. Word to the wise-when buying a control module check the year and model of the doner car, part number alone is not enough.

What I asked the dealer for was to remove the component protection. What they actually did I don't know for sure. They said it wouldn't take yet a few hours later it started to work but without screen open function. Perhaps the A6 module works in the A8 but not with all functions. It seems to have blue tooth screens I didn't have before-any chance they will work in the a* now?

hi with regards to part numbers there are only 2 part numbers for our a8 d3.

part number - 4E0035729 A - "A" represents the FBAS connector (green connector), basically if your audi is equipped with a TV tuner

part number - 4E0 035 729 - without TV tuner

also because our chassis type is 4E most of our part numbers begin with 4E dont quote me on all but majority.

Hello,
These are not per se part numbers, but 2003-2010 are 4E0 hardware, like the 4E0 035 729 plus "A" for FBAS input, but all "A8 - A8L" will have a "4E0" software, any other like 4L0 or 4F0 are not for the "A8'S"
