I think that all A8/S8 use the same DVD.

HI Guys

New to the Forum and a new Audi owner.

I purchased a 2005 A8L with 77 K miles on it.

I was told by Audi that I can NOT just get the Nav update disc. That I would need to update my MMI soft ware too.

The total price would be 1400.00 (250 for the Nav disk and 1150 for the MMI update) That seams like it is crazy!

My question is this. Can I just use the new nav disk disk or if an MMI update is needed is there a way to do it cheaper with out the need to take it to Audi for a reboot?

Mishar, you seam to be very knowledgable. If you could chim in on this I would appreciate it. Also amy one else with input would be a great help.

Thanks

Dan

Sure it is crazy. Those guys are called stealers for a reason.

MMI update is simpler than Windows update. Go here and buy software CD's. Part number is 4F0 998 961. Connect a regular battery charger (negative to the silver post above the battery negative pol), shut off all power consumers you can, open your windows (just in summer ), empty your CD changer, put disc 1 into slot 1, press Return and Setup buttons on your MMI console simultaneously (until you get a new menu), select Software Update and follow the instructions. Result will be 4610, newest MMI software version for North America. If you are from some other part of the world you have to check which version you need.

By the way, fill your Profile with your car year and where about you live.

You will also need a newer Navigation DVD, but that is the point anyways. So buy that one at the same time from the same place.

O yes, welcome to the Board and world of Audi's!

Default +1 in part; dealer is mistaken here on how Nav disk and MMI versions relate

Mishar gave you good answers already about how to update MMI at low cost.

The only scenario where the Nav disk and MMI update are interrelated is a 2004 A8 where the Nav disk has never been updated. Nav versions are generally the same as the model year for the Nav disk originally shipped w/ the vehicle, thus a 2004 starts with a v4 Nav disk. Further, the only time MMI MUST get updated is to install AMI (the "iPod"/MP3 related system) IF the MMI version is below 3360 [since updated twice to 4610]. 3360 was introduced after MY 2005, so if yours was never updated it will probably one of the 1xxx or 2xxx versions. In turn, 3360 (or later revs) require at least a Nav v. 5 disk. Thus, notice it's actually the other way around than what the dealer erroneously told you--its an MMI update that drives the need to be on at least a v5 version of Nav disk. And, since we know already from the earlier post it is a 2005 A8, in turn the Nav. disk already meets the minimum for any current or recent MMI update.

Net, update away on Nav if desired, independent of MMI. Independent of the dealer B.S., I would update MMI anyway if you are pre-3360. You won't find much difference year to year in the Nav disks probably (I've done it once), and as noted if you buy a couple of year old version on eBay you can get it cheaper.
