<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/129861/mmi_metal_gearset_replacement.jpg"></center><p>I have recently done this repair and replaced the broken gears with metal replacements that I picked up from a gear shop.
Still had to machine the ends a bit, but the end result has been perfect, smooth and quieter than stock operation.
You will have to disassemble ALL the wood trim from the dash to gain access to the MMI mechanism. It's not that bad, really.
What stage are you at? Give me an email for further details and check out my picture poster for more pics.

I bought a replacement gear from Mishar - he had some made up and had a few spares - maybe worth a pm to him to see if he has any left.
With regard to the job itself - nothing too tricky really - the hardest part is getting the sychronisation of the mechanism correct so that the cover closes correctly.
It is possible to remove the mech and then temporarily mount the screen back in the space in the dash - secured with a bit of foam or similar.
I seem to remember that it is a bit difficult to get to the connectors inside the dash but RHD may be different to LHD cars and the cable reoutes will differ soemwhat.
