Let me clear this up....
any low version you're supposed to upgrade to 3360 then to 4140 then 4610. The new 4610 version allows you to upgrade straight to 4610 therefore not needing to buy the 3360 upgrade disk...
Only reason the old 3360 upgrade process is still a thought was before 4610 came out.

The below is the correct and latest info needed on the topic:
If you have sw version 1070 or earlier you first have to update to 3360, then to 4610. You also have to have Nav dvd version 5 or above.
If your existing sw version is later than 1070, then you can upgrade directly to 4610. No need to go via 3360. Again, Nav dvd 5 or above is required.
SW version 4140 was discontinued because it had a nasty tendency of bricking the mmi whilst trying to update.
TSB on MMI sw update to 4610 here. Follow these instructions to the letter and you'll have no issues.
