Default MMI update proceedure

I'm going to update my 2006 A8L that's at version 11.90. I know most threads I search on the forum says that you need to have a battery charger on the battery. My question is what type of battery charger is adequate for the job. I have a deltran Battery tender that is rated at 1.25 amps at 12 volts. Is that enough to get the job done???

you'll be fine without a battery charger. I have updated 3 times without one.

Audi INSIST that the car is powered from an external source for a reason.

If the car is a MY 06 then the battery in all honesty, COULD be coming to the end of its useful life. As the battery gets older, it lasts far shorter between charges.

If you update the car on the battery and it dies part way through, there is a very real chance of being left with irreparable modules on the car. The modules erase and replace the firmware in sequence, so if it dies during an erase, but before a rewrite, dead module.

You may be OK, you may be not, thats a chance you take and it all depends on the condition of your battery.

To answer your question, at 1.25 Amps, it is not really big enough to power the electrics on the car so you will be ultimately be still relying on your battery.

You don't say what revisions to are upgrading from and to, some updates can take over 20 minutes.

If you are going to take the chance, make sure you turn all fans, music , and external lighting off (DRL's) as this will help reduce the load on the battery.

Personally, I wouldn't take the risk, a decent battery charger is not as expensive as the cheapest module!

I'm just wondering what size battery charger would I need. What's a good brand???

I've done two upgrades without a battery charger. I did the second one with the car running. I think that was probably a mistake though, but it worked. Just remember to roll down the windows before you start or you'll be mighty hot.

I recently did a MMI upgrade and noticed that the battery charger was putting out 6A to the car while all the systems were on.

Well I succesfully upgraded to 4140. I lost my battery meter but the system seems to run much smoother without any hesitation. I'm glad I did it. Is 4140 the latest revision???
