Default Not much available on the D3...

I approach this from the W12/S8 perspective, but the fronts are essentially interchangable to the 4.2 as I've documented. That took me down the path to EBC Reds. Somewhat less dust than OEM, nice overall feel and performance thus far.

Per my newest write up, the rears in the higher HP D3's cross over to the C5 RS6, but then the fronts don't. EBC is really the only thing I could find that covered both front and rear.

My Audi low dust choice would be Mintex reds, but the part numbers for D3's seem to be unobtainium in the U.S. Much lower dust than OEM from lots of experience with the C5 and some with the C4. A little more grab than stock with a sharp brake jab, but otherwise very similar. Not an aggresive pad though and not a track pad at all; would likely fit a typical relaxed D3 profile pretty well if they could be found.

I use Akebono's on my D2's exclusively. Amazingly quiet and dust free if you can get them for D3

Quoted from last link

Brake Conversion - Carbon/Ceramic
$32,495.00
If you want the ultimate stopping power, the Keramikbremsen carbon/ceramic composite brakes from quattro GmbH are just what the doctor ordered.
Translated from the Audi Deutschland website:

"Ceramic brakes offer not only quadruple the life span of conventional steel brakes, but also higher brake performance and high fading stability. After repeated braking, for example when driving on a sporting secondary road, the brake performance does not diminish.
"The unsprung rotary mass at the wheels are reduced by approximately 20 kg/45lbs (50%) over conventional brake disks and the result is noticeably higher driving dynamics and agility.

"AUDI ceramic brake disks consist of carbon-fiber reinforced ceramic. This material composition contains Silicon Carbide as the basic material, which is very hard and resistant to friction. In it are embedded high-strength carbon fibers, which effectively absorb material tension and stresses.

"The life span is quadrupled opposite an identically constructed brake disk from steel: The high abrasion resistance of the ceramic disks means a lifespan of up to 300,000km/185,000mi. Additionally, the extreme surface hardness of ceramic makes the brake disks resists road salt, corrosion and rust."

Kit is for front and rear and includes:
380x38mm drilled ceramic rotors, front
356x32mm drilled ceramic rotors, rear
Six-piston monoblock Brembo calipers, front (in anthracite color with signature "AUDI ceramic" logo)
Four-piston monoblock Brembo calipers, rear (in anthracite color)
Composite brake pad set, front
Composite brake pad set, rear
Upgraded brake servo
All related mounting hardware
Installation instructions on CD
Notes:
- Professional installation strongly recommended.
- Wheel size of 19" or larger is required.
- Special order item. Please contact us before purchasing.

Default Agree OEMs are a terrific mess, Akebonos would be my 1st choice

<center><img src="http://i530.photobucket.com/albums/dd348/Galco-photos/brake%20jobs/DSC02244.jpg"></center><p>I wish there was an Akebono application for our D3s as I found the Akebonos to be the best solution to performance, quiet operation and extremely low dust, on my previous 7-series with cross-drilled rotors, and the family's MB ML500 also with cross-drilled rotors (pictured above).

I ran 2 sets of Mintex reds on my BMW 740iL before switching to the Akebonos. Although the Mintex had performed well with a bit softer pedal, they became very dusty about 1/2 way through the pad life.

In addition, I'm running Akebonos on the fronts of an MB ML500 and Porterfield's on the rear as Akebono didn't have an application for the rear. Both front and rear are very clean set ups and I'm very happy with performance. The ML is well know for noisy brake squeal and with lots of brake quiet in the installation, all is quiet for over 8K miles.

I very much wish to change out the OEM pads on my A8. I recently bought the car with 18.5K miles with a fresh brake job with OEM rotors and pads. I was hoping the pads were dusting so badly as they are still breaking in, but after 1,500 miles, the dust is still unbearable.

While the factory set has outstanding performance, the trade-off is lots, and lots of dust. Which was also the case with my BMW and MB, however the Audi is far worse.

Based on MP4.4+6.0 EBCs Reds are the only "low" dust option and it sounds like there aren't as 'low' in dust as the Akebonos, Mintex or Porterfields. They have to be better than OEM as I'll clean my rims and within 2 days, they need another cleaning. That's just not acceptable, IMHO...

I'm continuing my search and would appreciate any additional feedback from others on the board.
