Navteq Map Data for Audi NAV systems
I asked Navteq about the integrity of the map data that they provide Audi for distribution with their Navigation systems. This is Navteq's response:
"Yes, The map data we provide for Audi is the same as the data that is used to produce the map discs for their in-vehicle nav systems. No, Audi is not 'pruning' the data. Is there a concern about the coverage of our data? If so, can you elaborate?"

More information from Navteq
<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/91373/w12_nav.jpg"></center><p>I got some additional explanation from Navteq:
A couple of things:
1) Garmin uses NAVTEQ data as well as data from other sources.
2) There are three types of coverage in our NAVTEQ data: Full Coverage, Detailed Coverage, and Inter-town Coverage. Full Coverage is the type of coverage you would see in a Garmin unit (all named roads within the lower 48 states). But not all of our Full Coverage data is street-verified by NAVTEQ field analysts.
3) Audi of America, out of safety concerns for the driver, has chosen to use only NAVTEQ street-verified data (Detailed and Inter-town Coverage) only. Inter-town Coverage covers only the major roads & highways and Detailed Coverage covers mostly the major metropolitan areas. This may be why Audi users aren't seeing coverage for some cities and towns in the current version DVD. Over time, Full-Coverage areas will become Detailed Coverage, but this is manual and time-consuming effort since Detailed Coverage roads are verified by our field analysts by physically driving these streets.
FYI: Our next version DVD is due to be released in August-September 2005.

Thanks for finding out this info rodmichael!
That explanation would account for what we heard earlier, that the data set was different. Personally I would rather have the full coverage, even if it's not verified. That would at least get me in the ballpark. I travel to many small towns here in north Texas where our maps only have a few roads. My Garmin has way better coverage.
So at some point, we should be able to get the full coverage data set?
