Default Oil Leak

I have an oil leak on the back side of the 4.2L 05 engine. Another person has an 07 with the same leak. A post on another forum said there are three access covers on the backside of the engine. According to the post the covers provide access to timing chains/cams. Apparently the seals on the covers start to leak. Is anyone familiar with these covers and where exactly they are. Thanks

07 is a different engine - your's is a timing belt but the 07 is a timong chain. There is little in common between the two.

However, the back side of the non-FSI engines have timing chains connecting the two overhead camshafts to each other on the rear side of each cylinder head.

The crankshaft to camshaft connection on the front of each cylinder head uses a timing belt.

I think that both timing belt and connecting chains are at the front of non FSI engine.

On the 4.2tdi, the transfer drive between the cams looks to be gears - this would mean the cams rotate in opposite directions.

I am not sure why they did not just run the chain round both cams and do away with extra complexity of gears or additional chains?
