Question for steering column experts or not...

I did install a relay to turn on my USB in the trunk when the ignition is ON, but I'm not content with that, I want to turn the relay on ONLY when the key's in the car or in the ignition. I noticed when I inserted the key in the ignition, I could hear the the steering column "LOCK" unlocked? How do I tap into this solenoid or where's the lock actually located? This is the power I want to use to turn on my USB and my raspberry pi in the trunk. If you have any pictures, please post. I checked the fuses, when I pulled the fuse, the solenoid was still active.
- Another way is the smart start module - where do I tap into the power that turns on the module when the key is in the car, this is also a perfect solution.
Thanks,
Louis

I’d be looking at the wiring schematics as my first stop to identify the module it goes back to, and then look into tapping into the wiring loom from there.

Hello Louis,
Here is a picture of the steering lock, it has a iirc 4 or 5 pin plug, of which 3 or 4 are used, again just going by my memory, BUT of more importance is the fact that it will not be a constant source of power, as it is not a solenoid, it is a screw type gear on a motor that gets momentary power to lock or unlock, so I do not think this would be a power source. See attached to video also.

Thanks for the video GG, now I have some ideas how it works. You may be right about momentarily actuated, but when the key is inserted - it stays off position and when it's out it's on position, so the key inserted is constant not momentarily. I need to find that signal when the key is inserted that actuate the lock.
I'm reading the Elsawin schematic at the moment. I'll find the correct solution to turn on devices just like normal car "ACC" position without having to turn on the whole ignition thing.
Cheers,
Louis

I don't know if this helps, but if you need to power on the USB/Raspberry PI as long as the head unit (MMI) is active, then you may want to check this thread here.
If you use the Raspberry PI to send video signal to MMI, then syncing it with MMI regarding power will be the right way to go, imho.

Silkworm,
I think that's the wire I'm looking for. Only on when mmi is on. Why wass connect to the wiper fuse and it still works? Please enlighten me.
Thanks,
Louis
