Default Radar detection systems: built-in

Over the years I've seen various BMW's, Mercedes, and Bentleys with built-in radar detection systems that have sensors under the front and rear bumpers, and integrate into or under the dash in some form or fashion. The two makers I'm familiar with are K40 and Escort/Passport QI45.

With the extensive amount of driving I do and the speed at which I travel, I'm ready to discard my dash-mounted radar detector in exchange for an upgraded, integrated system.

Has anyone else done one of these upgrades, and are there any other integrated systems I haven't mentioned? I really want to do away with the small box on the dash. And I know, Valentine makes a great dash-mounted detector, but it's not hidden and integrated...

In my experience, the best radar kits are the ones you mentioned. They have standard enhanced range radar detection as well as laser jammers and shifters. My friend has one built into his Ferrari 360.

The Escort 9500ci is the built in system, the QI45 is only the laser shifters that can be standalone or added on. Most common product people use is the 9500ci (which I would personally get). As your note states you have an 07 A8 which would somewhat make sense to do it to. It doesn't make sense for me to install a $1k roughly system after installation into my A8 that's worth roughly $16k resale,($1 million in my head). Although, If I were in your shoes I would only install that extravagant of a system in a W12 or a newer S8.

I currently use the 9500ix and have been since 2006, no tickets knock on wood and I had it hard wired right above my rear view mirror, this is what I suggest for you, out of sight out of mind besides when you see it, plus you save $600-$1200 depending on the setup you do.

Watch my video, and skip to the 7:20 minute mark.

Nice video you posted. I watched the whole thing. Well done! I plan to do the same conversions at some point. As for the radar systems, there are used ones posted on ebay from time to time which go for a fraction of the cost of the new one, as long as you can do the install yourself or know someone who can do it. There's no way I'd spend over $1000 for it. I can probably get it done with purchase and install under $400.

Default orrrr.......

Spend the money on improving your observational and driving skills, get rid of all the other little boxes (phone, iPod etc) in your car that distract you from the art of driving.
For one to expect to be able to drive around at Mach 1 in a protected bubble all the time is not only unreasonable but, in my opinion, is tantamount to admitting that actually, you're really not very good at driving. While we are in a country (world?) culture of not taking responsibility for one's actions, we have to accept that we are in charge of tons and tons of speeding killing machine, and if a person thinks they're up to that, then they should do all they can to mitigate the dangers in every way they can, not just get 'away with it' with a magic box.

Sanctimonious sermon over, drive, don't just move your car from point a to point b. Oh yeah, and Valentine can supply a covert, easily integrated display.

Let me start and finish by saying no politics here. Don't need another reason to plague the threads.

Yes, I did a remote install last winter. The posting for it was here:

Please excuse my feeble attempt at humor. Not really intending to promote a political discussion.

Impressive job! Well done! I hope my install isn't that difficult. I read recently where Escort/Passport has sensors that operate via bluetooth, which I'm guessing requires less wiring? Granted you'll still need the receiver inside the car wired up, but I love the idea of mounting it in the ashtray. I had been really scratching my head trying to figure out where to place the receiver.
