Rear Passenger air bag defective

My red fault airbag light illuminated telling me there was a problem with my air bag. I took it to the dealership and was told that the wiring, in the airbag, was faulty and the entire airbag needed to be replaced. While this may be true, I surely do not see how a airbag is wear and tear. It just sits there until you get into an accident. How can something like that just go bad. There has to be a TSB or something on this. Does anyone have any information? The dealer wants to charge 600 dollars to replace the airbag.
Please help.
Please help.

My service advisor told me same thing (faulty wiring). He re-set the sensors and fault went away. It has never returned. I hope this is the case for you.

Was going throught my service stuff and found that the light had come on once before, and they reset it, but when came on again...you know the rest. My service guy is out for a few days, but will try and track down TSB for you.
