timing belt kit =$500.00
tool rental fee =$ 50.00
doing the job yourself =1 day of your precious family time
working on a parking lot in the burning sun teaching your son a lesson while people laugh at your expensive car =PRICELESS.
look at the bright side of things, the $300.00 you saved will last barely a weekend,
the experience working with your son will last a lifetime.

Oh, the time spent doing the timing belt installation was done with my son so he learned quite a bit about shop procedures and the job we did was a success since until this problem occured far from home, the car has ran fine for the past year over 21000 miles . He also learned that he probably will not be an automotive service technician as his main line of work. However, he has gained some experience over the years with several of the vehicles I've owned so hopefully he won't get ripped off by unscrupulous service departments. There are enough of them over many brands.

The cracks in the ribs of th belt after a relativelly short time are indicative of an old belt that has been sitting in a hot warehouse for four or five years. The rubber has "dryed out" and becomes brittle.

UPDATE: I did an oil change today. I also took off the covers and inspected the timing belt. It looks fine both on the backside and the toothed side.
The replacement serpentine belt now has 1600 miles on it and still looks like new.

We have one hanging on the shop wall that looks perfect on both sides...except for the three missing 'teeth'. We keep it there as an object lesson for those who think their belt does not need changing if it looks good. After what happened toyour S belt I would be suspicious of the bargin goods. Did they have a framiliar OEM quality brand label?

To answer your question; Yes, the replacement timing belt has a familiar OEM name.
