Smaller wheels on S8
I have a set of MMR HR4 with stock tire size on my S8 265/35/20. 2 of the wheels have a slight out of round to them and the tires are very worn. Yesterday I had a blow out on the left rear(large tear in sidewall). I know all 4 tires have to go. I switched to the spare and hope to get the car in tomorrow for the winter tires thrown on just to carry me until the spring and I'll buy a new set of rubber.
Now, I actually like the 5 spoke 18" black spare alloy wheel. If it were aluminum colour, I wouldn't mind a set of 4 for year round duty. I find the 20" to be very rough even in comfort and easily damaged since I have 2 dented. I currently run 265/35/20 Dunlop Winter Sports
It looks something like this, but larger. Sorry its after dark or i'd take a pic

I have got 18" and 235/50 for winter. The ride is great but cornering is definitly an issue. If I would buy a new set of 18" I would go for 255's. I have the W12.

I think I'd like to go smaller come spring. I am tired of the rough ride and potholes damaging my wheels. I'm not too concerned about the handling. The S8 handles like a pig anyways. So nose heavy, my CTS-V was on rails compared to this. Sorry I wasn't terribly clear. I was tired and had a few glasses of irish whiskey.
Aside form some of the great advice so far, I would like to know some options for wheels either 18" or 19" so I can have a little more of a buffer

I like the look of the 18" Fat 5 spare wheel too, but it will make the less than sharp handling S8 worse.
My winter 19" tires tend to kneel over in the corners compared to the all season 20".
When I notice that my S8 degrades in handling, it's usually the inner upper control arm bushings that need replacing.

Also agreed, look critically at control arm bushings if not feeling crisp.
For an S8 you can go to 275's instead of 265's--same wheel specs as the later 4.2's with optional Sport 20's, or the W12. That gives you more tire selection choice, often at better prices, as well as a few tenths more tire sidewall for ride. If you look at the 19's, realize in seemingly gaining another ½" of tire rubber compared to the 20's if you want to soften ride, you are actually losing .15" the other direction, because both the 18's and 19's in stock sizing runs 27.0" tire diameters, while the S8 is at 27.3" and the various 275/35 A8 20" flavors are at 27.7".

Folks are rights the taller sidewalls will provide comfort (actually quite a bit more) but at the sacrafice of handling but if you pay attention to sidewall stiffness and load rating you can decrease the loss in handling to make it more tolerable.
I am running 19's on my A8 with 255/40 Pirelli P6 tires and the ride is great and we have some pretty rough roads out here.
