Default Soft close doors....what am I missing

Having now driven the car for over a week now (2007 S8), I just yesterday, tried the door closing to see if I had the option. I do and they all seem to work.

So I have to ask, what’s the point of these? as it seems to take more of a conscious effort to close the door gentle to the soft close point than just closing the door as you would a normal car. I get it from the point of a stealth get away that you can be a little quieter. My doors seem to work so well that even the most gentle of pushes closes the door properly.

What am I missing?

They are just that, nice softly closing doors, I can't stand it when someone slams my doors.....

Safety. Kids sometimes dont have the strength to close doors fully. The soft close makes sure the doors fully close.

Oldsters too who don’t have the strength perhaps for the doors. For new A8’s, the senior crowd is a big demographic. Car also has flow through ventilation of sorts, but you can actually pressurize a car pretty good when you close a door on a tightly constructed vehicle. Thus why an experienced windshield installer may tell you to take it easy early on.

But yes, 95% luxury thing. Owning Audi’s both ways—Q5 doesn’t have them—both the millennial era family members and I have grown to like them.

It annoys the hell out of me when I drive another car, stop, close doors, walk away, realize few feet away that this car does not have soft closing doors and come back to close them.

This is the first time i see someone complain about this fantastic feature. I HATEEEEEEEE people slamming my doors so i have been able to brainwash everyone that enters my car that they need little to no force to close the door. I loved this feature since i had my "old" Benz, Thank You very Much Mercedes for inventing this awesome feature

I imagine Art (in Engineering) would design the soft-close doors so that if slammed there would be no damage, although I agree it would be annoying.

After reading d6lp (OP)'s statement and thinking "What a doofus", I realized that I've never tested my Sage Green car (which I've had about a year) to see if it has them... although i seem to remember someone translating the build sticker and not finding that option. Of course, I seem to remember a lot of things; and seem to forget even more...
