Suspension Compressor Failure?

Suspension Compressor Failure?
2005 81K miles. Just as I pull into the garage and ready to turn off the engine, I hear kerchunk, kerchunk, kerchunk, etc coming from the left front wheel well. The only way to stop it was to disconnect the battery. Does this sound like a compressor failure? It was midnight, so I went to bed. I plan to pull the relay, reconnect the battery and run a scan. Any suggestions?

I reconnected everything this morning and the noise was gone. I then ran a VCDS scan. Other than showing the battery was disconnected, there were no serious problems. My mechanic ran his scan and again nothing was obvious. A mystery that I hope doesn't return when my wife is driving this car.

Thanks for the info. The sound appeared to be coming from the left front of the car. The parking brake worked normally and still does. If it occurs again, I'll let you know.

About once every month or so (depends on your driving) the parking brake does a self adjustment. It makes quite a lot of noise as you can hear the motors pulling in and out the brake pads. It last for about a minute to two and even when you walk away from the car it is still going on. How long was your noise going on for before disconnecting the battery?

I know the parking brake does adjust periodically, but this was a completely different sound. It lasted more than five minutes because I had to try to figure out what may be causing the sound, determine it wasn't stopping and then get the tools to disconnect the battery. My mechanic says to close the doors etc. and let it run its course and see if it stops when the car goes to sleep. Easier said than done when its late at night. Thanks for all the comments.
