TPMS rebuild kits are they necessary...

Ordered my tires and they will arrive tomorrow. The shop is suggesting TPMS rebuilt kits. My understanding is that they are just replacing the rubber seal and valve inserts. Seems like BS to me unless the current stems are leaking. Looks like a way to cash in on the govt mandate for TPMS sensors on all cars now.
Thoughts?

I have bought them before. Can find on web pretty cheap. But from disassembling, rubber and inner core are typically fine. What it mostly seems to do is clean up valve stem look (if you buy a complete stem); as they age, the brake dust and such seems to pit the faux silver plastic of the stem and related nut and washer.

Depends on the shops procedure about dismounting tires with TPMS sensors. Some drop the sensor into the tire and some don't. At our shops, we recommend replacing them when you change your tires. It is like changing your valve stem when you change your tires without TPMS. The biggest issue is corrosion inside between the sensor and the core. The worst thing is if someone uses an old brass core instead of a nickel plated core. Brass cores are never to be used with TMPS sensors. The will literally corrode and become non serviceable in a matter of weeks. I'm also coming from the perspective of an shop owner.
