TPMS not working even after tried to retrain. I am putting new tires on this week and since the sensors are 4.5 years old I thought I would replace them. Does that sound reasonable or waste of money. Should I pay someone to investigate further the cause of TPMS malfunction or just start with new sensors?

Certainly though you should read the error codes before just replacing sensors. If you see no pressure readings at any position on MMI, I would be surprised if all the sensors went at once. I think you can also check battery life (or some similar indicator getting at wear) with VAG COM.
Have you owned car since new? If not, any chance sensors aren't even there (like aftermarket wheels), or someone shut the system off? And if you have an older MMI version, I'm assuming TPMS is not simply turned off at the display.
Anyway, I would get the codes read, since if the parts are all there and enabled but there are no pressure readings, that it could well be a control box, antenna or wiring issue.

Took it to a non dealer audi mechanic to have new tires put on. I had bought 5 new wheel sensors for my OEM 19" wheels. When he tested the ones on the car, 3 were bad so I had him replace all 5. He still cant get the TPMS to work and recommeded I take it to the dealer.

#44-05-02 issued July 8, 2005. Applies to all 2004's above VIN 25000 (the last 5 digits),and all 2005's until VIN ending in 11276.
It talks about a rev. of the software code from 270 to 280. It says the symptoms are that the TPMS light is on, but the system is option is turned off and cannot be turned back on (I'm guessing that means it is greyed out). The update is on a CD, part # 4FO 906 961C. It says at the end the TPMS system must be reconfigured as part of the update, meaning it would need to be done by dealer or someone who has a VAG COM and can recode the unit with it.
