Default TPMS Troubles

I just bought a 2005 A8L and when I got it, it was saying that there was a Tire Pressure System Malfunction. I have tried and initializing the tire system and storing the current tire pressure but none of the tires are communicating with the system. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem and what they did to fix it. The Audi dealer was trying to say that I need to replace all five sensors which would be $1100 to do. I just thought that it was weird that all five sensors would go out at once so I dont think replacing them is going to fix the problem.

I have same car, same issue. There are tiny batteries in the sensors, once they go, the sensors need to be replaced. Good luck, you can find the sensors on eBay for about $100 each.

Tirerack carries them as well. I believe they were less than $100 each when I bought mine.

Get a reading with a VAG to check the remaining life on the batteries, if is less than 25 months replace them all, replacing one won't work for long.
if you change the adaptation value they may last 4-6 months longer but at the end they are done.
you only change the adaptation value if your tires still have some thread left so you can replace them together with the tires.

I don't think you can get a reading of the batteries as it is now, it seems you have no communication with the sensors.
if you can't set the basic settings or adaptation try recoding the unit, don't change anything use the same number and start from there.
sometimes when the batteries are totally dead the unit acts as if they not there at all. How old are your sensors?

Car is 2005. I believe sensors are 6+ years old. I’ve recoded it several times turning TPMS on and off. I don’t mind buying new sensors. I just hate if something else is wrong and new sensors doesn’t help.

I have a few questions: Does sensors work only when wheels are turning? What about one in the spear wheel? Would a system work with only one good sensor? Would 433mhz sensors from other cars work?

sensors work all the time, the spare wheel shares the same antenna as the right rear wheel, needs all 5 sensors, have no idea about 433 mhz as I never check what frequency they operate on.
Audi claims that the life on the batteries is good for 120 months but at 6 years seems just about right for them to fail, if you could get a reading on the battery probably would read something like 30-35 months but most likely one or two will be around 25 which at this point it triggers the fault shutting down the entire system,
for computers and lawyers is better to turn the system off and the fault light on than giving you erratic information and making Audi or the manufacturer liable in case of something happening resulting in injury.

i have an '04 with same problem. couldnt take the annoyance any more, so finally bit the bullet last summer and replaced all sensors. Worked fine until bitter cold weather came, now I get the same damn yellow malfunction symbol every day. Nothing has changed. ...incredibly frustrating.

If your 04' is running an older version of MMI you can just go into the settings and shut the TPMS system off altogether. Problem solved.
