Has happened twice since ownership (Sept '11). What does it mean???
I never seem to catch it until I start driving so I don't know if it would go back to normal if I were to just restart the car, but eveything works fine my next trip.
Anyone seen this before?

I'm not near the car and I believe it is covered in the owner's manual. I recall it means that the key fob is not transmitting the security bit that allows the ignition to work. However, if the engine is already running, it will continue to do so until shut off. Then it will not restart. I think the owner's manual says "Do not shut off engine, drive directly to nearest Audi dealer" as well.
In the meantime; S4Master, please respond as you know everything. Almost.

weird, I had the happen once on my D2 and nobody ever heard of it before and it wasn't documented anywhere. It took a few posts to make everyone realize I was seeing the word "SAFE" right where the trip odo normally appears.
Never figured it out and it never happened again. I did see one other guy post the same, also a D2 though.

Mister Bally is correct - it's an Advanced Key issue.
Possibly a new battery would help.
Also try to "use" the key in the dash once a quarter to keep it paired.

Appreciate it guys!! I did have a new gen ('10 S5) key in the car at the time...maybe that caused an issue? Anyway, glad its nothing more serious...a quick google search I did before posting this thread suggested it might be a tranny issue :-/
