Trunk hinges: What kind of dumb design??!?
I've read about the problems with the trunk hinges, but I thought it was something that once replaced it would not happen again. My CPO 05 has been fine for me for the past 5 months, and then the first time it was bitter cold they went. Dealer replaced it no problem, about 3 weeks ago. Tonight, another bitter night, I put something in the trunk and sure enough the same weird sound, followed by the open trunk indicator in the center display.
I am sure the dealer will replace no problem, but can I expect that this will happen over and over again? Should I never use my trunk in freezing temperatures? What a dumb design...

Mine keeps failing to close and there is play with it, get the trunk open sign.
Happens when it is super cold. I really don't know what needs to be fixed either. For some reason it just doesn't want to clamp down.

on my 2004 the trunk wouldn't close all the way-dealer
said I needed two new hinges. Finally determined they were bent toward the middle of the car. With a 2x4 and big C clamp I was able to bend it back into position and it seems to work fine now.

Yes....it will happen again
and again. Tonight was the third time it's happened to mine. I would like to be able to disable the auto open/close feature and just use it as a normal trunk.

I have had three seperate issue.....
1. Replaced the trunk hinges on a recall. Fixed the alignment issue.
2. Had to replace the actuator motor that lifts the trunk. This fixed the issue of the trunk failing to open properly. (It had been imediatley closing after you pop the trunk)
3. Most recently the dealer replaced the latch. As D3AeighT said, this fixes the issue of the trunk not closing. It seems to be the worst when it is cold out. the trunk won't latch so it opens back up. New latch fixes this.
All these are warranty issues and should be covered even if CPO.

Also had my latch/striker plate just replaced on my 2005
Ditto here on my 05 with 39K miles. Dealer replaced latch (they called it a "striker plate"). Works fine now, but I'm going to go easy on it after reading all these posts -- at least until it warms up!

I had forgot to post that my hinges were replaced years ago under the TSB..
then this "latch" issue cropped up just before I was getting ready for a Christmas trek to Tulsa from ATL. The part was on back order for over a week, finally they got word it was coming out of Germany and the new part ETA was after I needed to leave on trip and they actually took the part neede out of a new car and will replace it with the ordered part. Now that is great service.
