on my 2006 A8 (35k mi) the tech reports sensors need to be replaced as they've aged and normally stop working. approx $1k.
Surely that's a joke, right?

Nope, I have had everyone of my sensors replaced on my '04 under CPO. Replaced individually along the way when the battery dies in each. Most I have paid is $50 buck deductible each time.
Always covered under CPO without even a discussion.

At least in my 2006 w/ up to date software. Yes, the feature used to be there, but w/ MMI updates it wen't away. I think NHTSA regulations (thank you, Ford Explorer) now require this.
You can turn it off via VAG COM.

and available aftermarket. Cheapest I have seen lately is from ECS; slightly over $100 each for the body.
Similar sensors are used in many cars. The D3 system is high end w/ the near real time display of pressures and temp, for all wheels including the spare, and w/ localized antennas at each location. And, high end = $$.
Audi has been moving away from them recently in new models using the alternate technique of looking for small rotational differences w/ the ABS sensors. Probably they realized in addition to sesnor cost, it was a big warranty cost item too w/ non-lifetime sensors.

whole system seems very touchy, ill thought out and prone to problems.
