I'm also in the market for a used tdi and decided to not go for a 4.0. It's probably an awesome car but with only 40hp more than the 3.0 and worse consumption & emissions (higher tax) than the 4.2 I don't see any reason for getting the 4.0 other than if I stumble over a spectacular deal. I could be wrong but I figure it's like getting the cost of a V8 with performace of a V6
I went from a 300hp A8 to a 340hp S6 and did not feel any difference at all performancewise so I doubt you will be disappointed with the 3.0 compared with the 4.0. The 4.2 should be a different beast but I doubt you would find a good specimen within your budget but I might be wrong.
I've done quite a lot of research and it seems these cars are pretty hassle-free, which I also would expect from such a top of the line model. Of course you may be unfortunate and buy a lemon but as long as the service history don't indicate too frequent visits to the shop you should be OK.
Do some search on this and other forums and you'll see what kind of problems ppl had and what costs it incurred. And GL with the purchase

I would highly highly disagree with calling the A8 "hassle free" with owning a uber expensive luxury car also comes the super expensive repairs. Common repairs are usually MMI issues, or small gears breaking that move the screen, brake light switches, small sensors that go out, etc, now the parts may be somewhat cheap in rare cases but the labor sure as hell is not! I suggest investing your money in somewhat less expensive vehicle than the A8 and buy it fully loaded. You don't buy an A8 if your worried about gas prices, after all it's a luxury car for that who can afford the car and the gas. While the 3.0 is very underpowered, and you definitely can tell the difference. especially if your getting an A8 you won't want to skimp out. Especially when the 3.0 is a diesel.
P.S. I own the 4.2L petrol and it's great quick and very comfortable.
Good luck, and not trying to be mean, just preventing an unhappy purchase!

Well it's relative. When buying a used car, the only thing you know for sure is that it's gonna crap out on you sooner or later and if you're out or warranty it's gonna cost you an arm and a leg, which is the case for most German cars. Especially if you go to the dealer so the key is DIY or a good indy shop.
With "hassle free" I mean that I don't see the "standard" Audi issues like crappy front end of the D2 or C5, weak AT gearboxes, DRC issues, or the engine failures on BMW E60 diesels, Toyota brakes etc etc. In that respect the A8 looks more reliable from what I have seen so far but hey I might be wrong. I guess I will discover it myself these coming months
Agree fully though that if you're on a slim budget and/or don't feel comfortable with DIY projects you're better off getting something else.
