I am the new owner of a 2004 A8L and have been unimpressed with the ventilated seat option. I can't tell if it's working or not. Do others have similar experiences? The back massages also seems a little weak.

Most likely the vented seat option is working. It is very, very subtle, but it does make a difference. As for the massage, I suppose it depends on what you are used to. Shiatsu it is not.

...turn everything in the car off that makes noise except for the seats. You will then be able to hear the seat ventilation motor working. It provides just enough air to reduce the temperature of the seat.
I agree that it just barely works as I was expecting more.

for charging $1500 for it. MB has a much better solution - time for some reverse engineering...

The ventilated seats work great, but you only hear them when everything is off, and the setting is at high. I don't "feel" the air, but on hot days I don't stick to the seat. That is the purpose, it won't feel like an air conitioner is on your back.
