Thanks mp.

The seats appear to feel cool but, the backrests do not. Today was a 22 celcius day and thought i would test....i have a month left on new warranty so, i will add this to the list.

Default Picture(s) worth a thousand words. See...

Description of seat ventilation function is at pp. 70-71. Notice, it's basically two fans. (Maybe one of your fans is out BTW?). Also notice back on p 63 that underfloor vent to the rear seats. Not in the materials, but know from press reports that Piech (personally) apparently had a real hang up with drafts and the D3 system has a lot of his influence/directives. Thus figure that underfloor duct can be piping neutral temp. or even mildly warm air. And, it has its own electric heating element if you look through the materials. I also know VAG COM can see the diagnostics on that electric vent heater; maybe it can see codes for the seat ventilation too if you want to look into that. Meanwhile, the seat fans apparently suck ambient air and so guess what probably influences them the most?

Default seats are ventilated...not cooled

Unlike a lowly 04 Cadillac which has AC ducting to the seats and a fan to push the cooled air through the seats, our A8s have only a little 3 inch fan under the seat bottom and behind the seat back to push a bit of ambient temp air through the seating surface.

It would be nice to have cooled air, but having the ventilated seats keeps clothes much more dry in the summer VS non-ventilated seats.

If you want to know whether the seat back fan is operating or not, just put your ear to the seat back shell and listen for the fan sound,. They are quiet but not silent.

O how well you will remember every minute of cooling your back once you pass 50.

Correct, it is just air movement rather than cooling, but I suppose the effect is best and most noticeable if you are too hot before you turn the fan on, then it is quite obvious as it dries out any sweat - not a nice thought really!

Certainly for me, I can feel it b ut it does not exactly suck you down onto the seat, you still need to wear a seatbelt!

I think the electric heater elements are only fitted to the A8L or at least, cars with 4 zone climmate - certainly, I do not think mine has them - SWB and 2 zone climate but I do have ventilated seats.
