Default W12 Production Numbers

Does any one have a break down of how many W12 were produced per year and how many of those were exported to the US?

THANKS
John

Default Call/email Audi USA

and please post results here. Someone got those #'s for the S8 the same way.

When they intro'ed it, they said 200/year into U.S. I doubt they did that for more than first year or two. Number was probably well under 100 later in run. S8 took some sales out of it, and then 2008 crash took out luxo sales generally, and definitely D3's.

It's a rarer car even than a lot of exotics, and certainly more than its cousin Bentleys.

I emailed Audi and got the W12 Production numbers below. More US production than I had thought but still pretty small overall. 2005 was the first year for the W12 - Correct? If so it looks like a total of 1329 W12s have been sold in the US from MY2005 to MY2012. I have a 2005 silver with black interior - so based on the below my car is 1 of 23 that model year. I have posted in this forum a few times asking for advice or information - this is the first time I have found info and reported back! Glad I could find it and share.

There were 474 MY2005 A8L W12 sold in the US.

There were 44 MY2005 A8L W12 with LIGHT SILVER METALLIC exteriors sold in the US.

There were 23 MY2005 A8L W12 with LIGHT SILVER METALLIC exteriors and EBONY (Black) interiors sold in the US.

Additionally, the following years are available in regards to your request.

There were 475 MY2012 A8L W12 sold in the US

There were 0 MY2011 A8L W12 sold in the US as they were not available for sale

There were 0 MY2010 A8L W12 sold in the US as they were not available for sale

There were 78 MY2009 A8L W12 sold in the US
There were 125 MY2008 A8L W12 sold in the US
There were 148 MY2007 A8L W12 sold in the US
There were 229 MY2006 A8L W12 sold in the US

Default Interesting--

so they way oversold the first year estimate in 2005 but then it tailed off as expected. At give or take 1000 in sum, it's as rare as the C5 RS6 was in the U.S., though that was totalled at the rate of 20% per year--as high as loss rate as the M5's of the era. I haven't heard of W12 accident totals in general as a big deal, so I expect the numbers actually out there on the road are holding steadier.

And yes, W12 production stopped by early 2009, so run was cut short and there are no 2010's. Same w/ S8. As a trivia point, supposedly the 2010's with 4.2's were run with S8 trunk deck lids w/ the spoiler lip, but I have yet to see one on the road locally.

i have yet to see a D4 W12 on the road, and have maybe seen only 1 D4 S8; do see the ginormous A4-esque A8's occasionally but still struggle to be sure it is an A8 in reality from a distance.

Not really w12 related, but did you have any s8 production numbers? I have a 2009 s8 and I have read that their numbers are relatively low also.
Thanks!

Default Search thru archives

for this forum, either with the search function or by using the advanced search function of google to specify hits from this site. Someone posted on it in the last year or two after calling Audi and getting the exact numbers on the S8 too.

I did a bit more searching and did not come up with anything else here. I hopped over to Quattro World and found this:
2007 - 1144 Units imported
2008 - 396 Units imported
2009 - 209 Units imported
Sorry to bomb the thread, thanks for the help.

Default That fits; 2007 "over" production

Yes, that sounds familiar. And from living through it conemporaneously when I bought my W12 CPO, Audi seemed to overestimate demand and kind of flooded the market in 2007. By the end of the year, there were tons of them on dealer lots, at least in the SF Bay Area, and others apparently backed up at the ports. The 4.2's were mostly gone, while the S8's showed up easily on dealer investory searches. At the time all D3 purchasers got quite frustrated, especially with custom orders, after the 2008 refresh was widely known because the 2008's got held at the ports for quite some time. It wasn't until early calendar year 2008 they actually surfaced at dealers, very late for any model year car.

Meanwhile, any W12 or S8 from 2009 is a rare bird. Both with comparatively low volumes, but also because they stopped production entirely before the end of the full 2009 D3 model run, leaving only 4.2's to finish out the model year. And in a weird quirk, 2010 4.2's came with the S8 trunk lid w/ the spoiler sort of tail to it, whether because they stamped out too many or just wanted to do a last 4.2 D3 going away spiff.

My 2010 4.2 did not come with the S8 lid but is a LWB so may have a slightly different trunk lid than the SWB. I have yet to see a 2010 SWB in my area but as total worldwide D3 production for MY 2010 was about 8,600 units (produced in 2009) as compared to the peak of almost 22,500 for MY 2007 I am not surprised. You can get sales numbers by looking up the Audi annual shareholders reports from any given year.
