after 3 years... wow, that was fast..
Today, while waiting for the family shopping, I shot a video to see how the trunk's holding up after a week of non-operation and 3 years without lubrication on the hinges and the original trunk shocks... ah, also original battery (only in CA). It's a 172Nm motor.

I wonder if I just have bad luck. I have the spring mod as well as a brand new OEM trunk motor installed in March 2015. Now the trunk requires a small help of lift to carry itself open. It closes just fine on its own though without any sudden drops.

Probably both because of Audi's Art of overengineering of this trunk system. What I have found from experience is a new motor overcomes the hinge and strut issue until the motor wears for a year or so. Then the issue creeps up again. I think most of the time you have to replace the motor and struts to keep it working over the long haul. I am going to try a set of the Stabulis struts. My 09 has the updated hinges and motor but on a real hot day and sitting in the sun for a few hours, it sometimes won't lift by itself. If it's moderate temp or sitting in my garage, it opens 100% of the time. Will report back if the struts cures the hot trunk issue.

Struts won't help much because they don't have any leverage in the beginning where motor actually fails. Check the hinges alignment. The right one usually get bent and start touching the strut in the critical position. It is easy to strait it with players. Not the best photo but you will get the idea.
