It is right under (above) the belly pan on a W12 on the passenger side of the motor, staring you in the face. It's all the way at the bottom sticking out the side of the lowest part of the motor, just above the height of the pan. As a result, REALLY easy to get at, much more so than any of the 4.2's.
I first got my filters (Hengst is the OE supplier) from AutohauzAZ for supplemental changes between the dealer ones, but sometimes get them from the dealers online. The W12 is NOT the same as the 4.2, though side by side it's hard to see the difference--slightly different lengths, center opening diameters, etc. If by chance, you try an eBay, be wary of anything for the Phaeton W12; they started with a different sized oil filter canister that in turn takes a different filter. They eventually TSB'ed them to swap for the Audi W12 canister given their low volume and end of life/the road status in the U.S., but the orphaned Phaeton stuff at least used to float around there.

I think there's a spot to mention your reference. I'd appreciate it if you put my name in there. I think I get a little cred for something.

That's the key. You have to pick it all up yourself. Look at their website or call the 800 number and they'll point you toward the closest stocking location to you.

I used walmart SuperTech Full Synthetic 5W30 Motor Oil from 80k to 136k miles on my old 2004 A8. My "new" 2006 has always been serviced at dealer in San Diego Dealer who used Castrol syn. Any thoughts/
