Default Not sure. Ideas:

Need someone w/ S8/V10 knowledge. Here is the parts diagram for starters (part 39A): http://www.partscats.com/audi/en/?i=...ent_id=1231311

The piece I recognize a bit is shown almost like it's an alternative: the suction jet pump as part 36. That part exists on my 2000 A6 4.2, though on A6's it was back by the firewall. Name on it misleading too, since it is purely mechanical and seems to function as a one way valve. That was also called the "suck pump" or the "suck valve" on the A6's; was also fit to at least the 2.7T's. I used to think it was part of the PCV system, but looking at this S8 diagram, it looks more like it is some kind of a bypass system that would let air get past the throttle plate if it were closed, but where they don't want to meter it w/ the MAF(s). That could come up in a deceleration mode where the intake can otherwise pull lots of vacuum and they want to feed the motor some air to manage it. The squeeze type connector I see in your picture also matches up, since on both my older 4.2 and my A8 W12, I see those kind of connectors involving things around air related systems for the motor. Then with your actual part 39A per your picture, just guessing yet more it's equivalent but they didn't like the air noise so muffled it yet more. Just speculating though. And if it's a bypass with throttle shut off, I can see why that's about the one time you would not get a code for a vacuum leak here. Still might expect a code though for normal run mode and related intake vacuum.

Clear it needs the new intake hose/tube where the fitting is broken, both for aesthetics but also for vacuum leaks and poor running to follow if the patchwork gives way.

To emphasize the sporting characteristics of the V10
engine, a Soundpipe (similar to the one in the 2007 Audi
TT 3.2L V6 MPI engine) is used. It directs the intake air
sound over a special diaphragm and tuning filter

The old Tuning Filter, eh? Those wacky Germans. As a somewhat temporary fix, I'd wrap a Permagum Cord around the break. No painting would even be necessary. They are meant to be wrapped around the discharge lines on an air conditioner so they can handle high temperatures. Or, a bead of JB Weld if you can get access to the broken area or if it is easy enough to remove everything. The JB Weld will be black so maybe some silver paint afterward?

I was tempted to just remove it entirely and patch it closed. Would this cause issues?
