Been meaning to post this question for awhile...

I have a whining sound that I hear at idle and lower speeds. Its sounds like something on the belt. I've had this issue with two other cars and one ended up being the alternator and the other the power steering pump.

Before I look into this, I wanted to find out if some degree of "whining" is normal for this car. Car has 67K on it now.

My D3 would whine/groan a tiny bit at low speed but never at idle.

enGage, my D3 has a bit of a mild rumble on the belt... I think it's the belt tensioner... maybe you could check that...

Have you changed your powersteering oil? If you turn your steering wheel all way left/right is there any change in that whining noise?

I've had mine for about 65k, it always had a noticeable whining noise at low speeds (backing out of driveway). I have always told myself it is the power steering pump moving the 19" wheels. Makes me feel better. LOL

I've been having what may be a similar problem (A8 4.2 quatro). My car is a 1999 with just 58,000 miles. I took it to the indy shop I use and naturally the noise wasn't there when I took the mechanic for a spin. We decided to put new timing belt, water pump, thermostat, brake flush while they had it, along with a drive belt tensioner. They thought it was okay, but the noise came back the next morning.

Seems more noticeable at lower speeds, up to 50-55. Any ideas would be great. I need to have mechanic in the car when the noise is apparent.

Could just be a wheel bearing. Please post in the D2 forum as this is the D3 forum for 2003+
