Or....will I need to go to Audi to get a good quality set that fits right? I've done a search but never found any conclusive source for really nice floormats with the grommets in them.

Lloyd Mats. Autoanything.com has good prices on them. Although no grommets, they have tabs mounted on the underside that properly attach to the posts attached to the floor carpet.
If you go with them, check the driver's mat for possible accelerator pedal interference. I trimmed mine about 2" x 2" near the accelerator pedal as I had stuck pedal incident once. Search the forum here for details.
I have not found an Audi OEM mat as nice as the Lloyd mats. Too bad that they cannot put an Audi logo on the mats. Lloyd used to be able to. My 1987 5000CSQ came with Lloyd mats with the Audi logo. Lloyd is no longer authorized to put Audi's logo or trademarks on their mats.

I think the OEM's are pretty good...
color match, exact fit, hold up pretty well etc. Pile is very low and tight, and of course thin--definitely not a plush type.
Only other thing I have seen is a place that advertises on ebay Germany (and maybe ebay UK?; you can find the ad in English too) that sells mats to order and lets you pick material, plushness, etc. I have seen a confirming post or two somewhere that says they are for real, and high quality. Trouble is shipping makes it fairly expensive--like double.

Agreed
I recently got a set of Lloyds heavy weight mats from Autoseattle.com and was very pleased with the fit and quality. The tabs and nonskid backing do an excellent job of holding the mats in place and they are oh so plush. Makes you want to drive barefooted. I too wanted the A8 logo or Audi rings embroidered on them, might take them to a custom shop here and have it done. The only thing that would be better would be to have sheepskins as in Rolls.

Ha. I'll try to take a picture later on. This was one of the first things I added to the car
problem with it is the sheepskin catches dirt very easily. I bought some cheap sheepskin rugs from ikea when they're dirty I just toss and buy new ones.

Great idea, I had thought about that but couldnt figure out where to get cheap ones. Nearest Ikea from me is about hour and a half but a good excuse to take a cruise.
