For the S8 (and, if Audi decides to bring them to market, the RS 6 and RS 7), the force fed gasoline V8 will be a supercharged 4.2 (NOT turbocharged, twin turbocharged and so on and certainly NOT 4.0 or any other displacement that is not 4.2). The twin turbocharged V8 in the S8 will be a diesel 4.2 (no other displacements).
The supercharged (NOT TURBOCHARGED OF ANYKIND) gasoline and twin turbocharged diesel V8s in the S6, S7, A8 and A8L will be 4L (no displacements other than 4.0 for these Audis).
These V8s in the S8 and, if applicable, the RS 6 and RS 7 would have to have larger displacements, higher pounds per square inch for the forced induction, higher peak horsepower, higher peak torque, a wider peak horsepower curve and a wider peak torque curve than these same V8s in the S6, S7, A8 and A8L, given the luxury, performance and price classes, target markets and targeted buyers, financers and leasers of the S6, RS 6, S7, RS 7, A8, A8L and S8.

Audi A8
Personally I would prefer a supoercharger to a turbo charger....and I would really like to see a TDI A8 here in the States...
- 2012 Audi A8: After a full redesign in 2011, Audi may upgrade the A8's base engine from a normally aspirated 4.2-liter V8 to a turbocharged, direct-injection 4.0-liter V8 with around 400 horsepower.
- 2014 Audi A8: Look for a minor midcycle refresh for the 2014 model year.

The force fed gasoline V8 will be supercharged (4.2L for the RS 6, RS 7 and S8 and 4L for the S6, S7, A8 and A8L).
The diesel V8 will be twin turbocharged (also 4.2L for the RS 6, RS 7 and S8 and also 4L for the S6, S7, A8 and A8L).

My ultimatum to you, darkop, is that you accept, deal with, go along with, learn, live, respect and understand that all of the above is definitely going to happen (no ands, butts or ifs).

No need to argue on this! It's been confirmed by senior audi official that all big engines will maintain turbo as the forced induction option and that only the 3.0 l will be SC! Also it's leaked already that a8 gets 4.0l turbo with 420hp in europe and s8 gets the same engine but with 520hp...

It was on another forum. A guy visited a private presentation in Moscow and got all the details that proved to be very accurate till now...

so 4th quarter of 2011 but that doesn't mean your 4.2 will cease!
let me know if u dont see anything!
also, Michael Dick was talking about how putting superchargers was only feasible in small displacement engines and that all the big ones would still have turbos... can't find the link but it was very frequent article when the S4 was introduced to the market back in 2008 with its 3.0 tfsi and later on! quite positive about this one...

Sounds like solid info
I just called my salesman and asked about the possibilty of a larger, turbo in the A8. I am ready to buy as soon as the A8 is available for a test drive, but now I might just wait a year. I own my '06 A8L, have 43K miles on it and an extended (7-yr, 70K mile plantinum) warranty. I can easily wait one more year.

Agree on the wait for the 2010 D4. Not just the potential engine upgrade, but the likely fixes that will be necessary on the new model as well as possible other tech upgrades on the 2012. If a 2012 engine produces 420 bhp, that is a major increase and depending on torque will definitely be noticeable compared to the D4 4.2 NA engine. Won't put it in Pan 4S territory, even thought the 4S has only 400 bhp, but it will definitely be worth a year's wait. I could easily live with my D3, especially since the buyout/residual level is well below the market on the car now.
