Then I’ll walk through scenarios based on what happens with manual turn outputs and what vcds.

Couple of questions though - I have Bentley Manual from my D3. Doesn’t seem to be one for D4?

if I ended up needing engine - conceptually - would salvage 4.0 T from any year D4 A8 work? Would 4.0T from a D5 work? 4.0 T from an s6/s7?

thanks as always!

Sign up for a 24hr subscription and download everything based on your VIN. Best tool we have. I did it for my D4 4.2 and my friends A7. That's our Bentley Manual

Yep, looks like you need the tool.

Manual via ewWin down load or alldatadiy for a pretty good web version, though not as complete as full factory or Bentley was. There are a few guys who sell manuals by VIN if you poke at web--which I think are really just erWin downloads compiled into a pdf. erWin does require "Win"dows if you run Mac OS.

Well, worse case scenario. Had my independent look at my car. FUBAR, more than FUBAR.

Hydrolock, 4 bent rods, Turbos gone, Starter Gone, Cats most likely gone, o2 sensors for 30 seconds of running. Everything I've ever saved by doing things on my own. Gone - all because of my stupidity/lack of attention to a basic maintenance item.

Not even sure what to do........ Anything I do (used engine) is a crap shoot + at least $20K, new engine $23K + other fixes way over $30K - far more what the car is worth. I'm just FUBAR. Thanks all for the previous responses and guidance. I wish the oil filter was on top of engine and had a dipstick like my D3 - even with my lack of focus this would have never happened.....

FWIW, I had a 1999 A-6 that I took to a local Cadillac dealer for service (after warranty expired). Service tech drained the tranny and added oil to the engine. Drove away and it wouldn't shift right, but engine ran OK. Took to VW dealer (no Audi dealer in town) and service tech figured it out. No long tern effects to engine or tranny.

I'm sorry to hear this...any consideration to have the engine rebuilt? It won't be cheap but should be significantly less expensive than a new or used replacement. Alternatively, there must be some residual value for your engine to help offset the cost of a new engine?

Have you tried to source a used engine from LKQ- may run 10K installed. Good luck,

Gah, well that really sucks. I feel for you; tough to stomach for sure.

For perspective, just remember, there are lots of other worse things that can happen in ones life....no one died, no tornado occurred, no house burnt down, etc.

I'd get a price for a used engine from my Indy were I you. If you don't want to do that, put it on the market for parts and swallow the loss.
