Default Oil Strainer Safety Recall Eligibility for Tuned A8/S8 Cars

As someone with a stage 2 setup, when I heard the news about the warranty extension for turbo failures I naturally knew that this coverage would not be extended to cars like mine due to it being modified. Now with what seems to be a proactive "safety" recall I'm wondering if those same rules would apply as well. I realize it's not really up to anyone on the board to know this for sure but I thought it would be an interesting topic to kick around.

What do you think? I can certainly rationalize in my own head that the presence of a tune, mods, and possibly even a **** poor oil change interval couldn't override a government safety recall.

I'm pretty sure they can't deny you this safety recall due to mods. They can deny if your mod might have caused the failure, but the screen issue is all on them.

More to the point, we’re dealing with 90 µm compared to the previous 30 µm. So for us 2017 vehicle owners, make sure you know your manufactured date. Mine is 04/17 so it looks like I am good with the update screen ..... I may call my Dealer to confirm

From 1.2 thousandths of an inch to 3.5 thousandths of an inch... Now it won't block up for three times as long
.
I still vote for removing it all together.

Oil Strainer

REPAIR NOT YET AVAILABLE
START DATE
Mar 29, 2022
AUDI ACTION CODE
21H7
DESCRIPTIONThe oil strainer within the oil supply for the turbocharger might become blocked by oil/carbon deposits contained in the engine oil. A blocked oil strainer within the oil supply for the turbocharger leads to a lack of lubrication of the turbocharger bearings. This causes wear on the bearings and, as a result, the turbine wheel of the turbocharger may contact the housing, or the turbocharger shaft can break. This could lead to a lack of power or even stalling, which could increase the risk of a crash.

NHTSA RECALL NUMBER
22V178
REMEDYREPAIR NOT YET AVAILABLE
Does “Repair not available yet” mean the redesigned oil strainer does not solve the problem adequately. Lots of discussion of removal of the strainer. I had turbo failure and the replacement strainer installed. Maybe it is still at risk. Thought?

Has there been any war stories from folks who had removed theirs? The oil filter, I mean.

You mean the SCREEN, right? Yes, that was discussed and is still under contention.
.
I figure that 1) the oil passing through the screen comes directly from the oil filter, and 2) No other car except Subaru employs this strategy (and they make theirs easily accessible).
.
If I can get the recall service tech to remove it completely, that's what I'll do. I may even bribe him

More info, please! What year is your car? Miles on it when the screen was changed? How long from then until turbo failure? Any idea what condition the turbos were in when the screen was changed?
.
I imagine that "Repair n.a.y." means that Audi hasn't organized the recall campaign yet.

Sorry I was probably not clear. 2014 A8. At around 77K miles at failure. Last summer I was on a long highway trip and the turbos failed. I had to get it towed to the nearest Audi dealer (in NC). Took a few weeks, but they did full repair, including putting in the re-designed strainer. $11k repair bill. My question is whether that new oil strainer fixes the problem. The new oil strainer has about 10k miles. I am now doing oil changes every 5k miles.
