I have a 3.0T. I agree with Puzz1. The 3.0T is sufficient to move the car with haste. The only time I usually want the 4.0T that I test drove is coming out of the toll booth. Otherwise the 3.0T is good, moves the car with ease in traffic and when needing to fill gaps.

I have seen posts of some thinking that the 3.0T sounds like it is trying too much to move the car. I disagree, seems fine to me. However, after about 70mph, the acceleration curve drops off rather quickly. If you watch the youtube videos of 0-60 times, you will see the 3.0T lag the 4.0 by 0.5sec or so up to 60mph. Then the next 40mph is 3 seconds slower.

The twin turbo V8 obviously can produce a lot more power and it is a good engine but will be more expensive to maintain and there have been a few more issues with these motors. They are more complicated and harder to work on. Gotta pay to play. Transmission is the same between the two engines.
The first part of your post intrigues me.... whats a stock tune? And is one available on the 3.0?

also, i've been reading about the APR tune and i'm *guessing* it will void the warranty comes time, but is it reversible so the dealership wouldn't pick it up?

Factory tune. I want to do the dual pulley system with intercooler. It's good for -

93 AKI / 98 RON 465 HP 428 TQ +120 HP +97 TQ

He's just saying that in factory configuration, it is more powerful than the motor found in the A6 by about 20hp, which is true. The S4 with the 3.0t is the same as the one found in the A8 and makes identical power.

Not gonna lie, really wanted an 4.0, but none were around due to the way they are optioned out here in the middle east. An 4.0 would usually be loaded running you around 110K US.

Makes sense, thanks for clearing that up.

The post reminded me of my old days driving domestic cars ... a $300 ECU chip would really liven up the car and can be pulled out at anytime so i was wondering if something (albeit more sophisticated) was available.

I got my cpo 3.0 for about $12k if not more less the comparable 4.0's I was finding. Of course everyone loves more power but for me it was not worth the premium.

I'm seeing more like $7K, but that is for mostly 2014 models.

I paid $33,6 with 54k miles. I'm pretty happy with that price. Looked for a while though. Came with the massaging seats, cold weather, pano sun roof. So not fully optioned obviously but getting that price with 2 years or 46k miles of cpo warranty sold me. Trying to put more money into real estate and not cars anymore. Really like the car. I put on about 22k miles a year and it's a pleasure to drive every trip.
