I'll throw in my 0.02 cents as well. I've had Audi S4 and most recently the previous generation S6 ( 2008 with the V10). Fantastic cars, stable and very enjoyable. My wife loved the car so much that she didn't want to sell it.
I also had an SL55 AMG and the sound was amazing. In the end, I sold our S6 and we picked up an 12' ML63AMG and now my wife no-longer wishes for the S6! I recently just got a Maserati Granturismo MC and I no-longer wish for an SL55.
Given you can get an E63 AMG with AWD this fall I would seriously consider AMG's. I'll more than likely move from the Maserati to an S8 in 3 years or so.

Had an '06 S55 that was a monster engine but poor chassis. Sold that and leased a '09 S8. Was OK but not the greatest. V10 was bragging rites but not nearly as quick as the AMG. Sold that and drive a SL63. Yeah, different car althougher but wow, no complaints here. Get yourself an AMG then back that up like I did with a S4.

A few additional comments, based on other questions you have:
- If you want that angry V8 sound, you'll probably have to do an exhaust. Turbo cars are quieter than normally-aspirated equivalents because the turbo acts as a pretty good muffler. Regardless, I don't think you'll ever get the same quality of sound as you enjoy with the AMG.
- The mid-range response of this motor is incredible. You'll get more torque at lower revs than almost any normally-aspirated engine. This wave of torque is addictive in it's own right.
- Pretty much any throttle application kicks it out of 4 cylinder mode
- Shifting between 4 and 8 cylinder operation takes between 1 and 4-hundredths of a second. My "seat-of-the-pants" isn't calibrated that finely, so I don't notice any lag. Perhaps YMMV.
