And the blogger thinks the Merc S550 is more interesting?!!! Maybe, if you think a bundle of disparate shapes mushed together into one car is interesting---I suppose.

Hey there! I'm the blogger who wrote the post...thought I'd repost my response to OP from my blog. Keep in mind that I'm a fan of the A8 - I only wanted to make a very specific point by including it on the list of "boring" cars:
"The A8/S8 is clearly an impressive car with awesome technology, etc., etc. That's obvious. Realistically, the Top 10 boring cars list could have been Toyota Camry, Toyota Corolla, Honda Accord, Honda Civic, Chevy Impala, etc., etc., etc., but that would have been a boring, predictable post.
The reason why I included the A8 on this list is because compared to other $80k cars, the A8's exterior styling is not as expressive. From afar, a non-car enthusiast would have trouble distinguishing between the A8 and A6, whereas (in my opinion) the S Class is fairly unique compared to the E or C Class, and the 7-Series vs. the 5-Series. Many people buy the A8 precisely in order to blend in (and I can understand that)...because it is a safe, conservative design. Nothing offensive, nothing groundbreaking, that's all.
I haven't driven an A8, S-Class, or 7-Series, so I can't comment on how it drives in comparison, but that wasn't my point here."

I don't own a D4 but I know someone with one they are anything but boring and to see one of these beasts in your mirror approaching makes you want desperately to get out of the way. Also to compare an $80k BMW or Mercedes to a $100k d4 and call the subtle, sublime limozine Audi boring is like calling the queen of England a nice stenographer.
