In Illinois, at least, a friend keeps his in his glovebox. Always. And it always registers. If your tolls have a light that comes on when you pass through, showing your Pass was accepted, give it a shot and see if it works. Will solve all your problems.

My Pass died about a year ago, never got a new one. And no one seems to care. I don't get a ticket, they just have cameras that take a pic of your license plate (rear) and just debit your account. No reason for me to go get a new one...

This is my experience also -- My California Bay Area FasTrak passes are over 15 years old but still sort of work. I called once because I thought the battery died in one of them (it often wouldn't beep or register when driving through the sensor). The person on the phone said not to worry about a replacement since my license plate will just get captured and they'll still charge my account. So now I don't worry if the pass works or not as I use the bridges. :-)
