The W8 went down last week. Intake cam bank 1 to crank position fault. Engine turned into a paint shaker. Ended up being a small piece of filter screen stuck in the control solenoid for the variable cam. The job wasn't too bad once I got motivated. The engine looked surprising clean for 232,000 miles. I have only ever used the mobile 1 0-40W. I plan on using mobile for the life of the W12.

Any tips on the carbon clean?
Ignore New England, I asked so you get a free pass

The full leather adds leather to basically every surface except for lower A, B and C pillars. To see if your car has it look for extra French stitching in these places: the upper section of the dash where the tweeters are, along the top of the door cards and along the door pockets, behind the headrests. You can also feel for leather on the lower dash (glove box, driver’s knee panel) backs of the seats and map pockets and the panels where the seat switches are.

As for the carbon clean, if you want to do it yourself it’s not hard, just time consuming. I did a little write-up here. I cleaned chemically with BG clean. You’ll need new intake seals (12 of them) and you ought to do spark plugs while the intake manifolds are off.

.
I admit that I have some passive interest in the W8 engine. How could I not?

Ha! Caught red handed

Charismatic sounding engine, but not as charismatic to drive. 300hp and it’s adequate but it’s very much more of an easy going engine than wanting to be sporty. If you’ve driven a Jag XJS V12 it’s actually fairly similar in feel. They also were not without their issues and, like the D3 W12, space was limited so it was very annoying to work on certain things

Yes, it is very annoying to work on, but very well built. Everyone says that the W8s are not reliable and have too many problems. I have not had that experience. Yes they break, I have never owned a car that hasn't... I also consider this my W12 starter kit. I assume that the technology is very similar and should be an easy transition. Hope the W12 never breaks though... Wishful thinking.

I checked on the leather package, about 90% sure my W12 does not have it.

Side note. Does anyone know where to get the maintenance schedules for the W12s. 50,000, 75,000, 100,000?
