Well I finally got around to testing if I could leave the car running and lock the doors like I did with my old 05 and I found out that I can. East steps with the car running and in park:
1) roll drivers window down
2) un-lock the door, open it, and get out
3) close the door
4) reach into the car through the open window and lock the door
5) Then press the auto up button on the window
Now my car is running with the doors locked but no key in the vehicle. With my old '05 I could just pull up on the handle twice and it would unlock as long as the smart key was on me. With the '13 it won't open, so I have to pop open the physical key and unlock the door manually through the key slot.
It's a little hassle, but for a quick run into Starbucks my car interior stays nice and comfortable!

Here's an easier solution if it works. For those with two part advanced key fob, remove the mechanical key from the fob and just lock the door manually.
