Default MMI CD Ripping

Does anybody know what format and bitrate the MMI uses when it rips a CD into the hard drive?

My understanding is that, for copyright reasons, you cannot rip directly from a commercial CD. You'll first have to rip .wav files to another medium (CD-R, DVD-R or SD card) and transfer to the Media Drive from there.

From memory, I believe the MMI rips at 256 kbps CBR.

That is the stock set-up however, after a small adjustment in the hidden menu, one can rip away directly to the hard drive.
I know as I have done it.

My question revolves around whether it is better to rip CD's at ACC 320kbps to SD cards and them import them or just have the MMI rip the CD right into the hard drive. If the MMI is only chopping them to 128kbps mp3 files, it's not really worth it...

Adjustment to a hidden menu (if so, where) or using VAG-COM?

My understanding is that MMI re-codes to it's own MP3 standards, regardless of the source. This strikes me as foolish, as it's frequently recoding a lossy format to another lossy format. Best results will thus come from starting with the original CD or lossless file.

You need VAG-COM to enable the hidden menu, then you access the hidden menu via the MMI to allow ripping of CD's straight to the hard drive.
This is standard in other countries but not in the US.
Do a search on this forum for my old posts on how to do it. If you strike out, I can can dig it up.

You can do it with vag-com but it is sloooooooooow..... copyright reasons aside it took me close to 20 minutes to copy a whole cd.....
