I have high performance winters that are rated for 150mph. If you use a 20x9 rim et 35 or 40 with a 265x40-20 tire you will have zero issues. I hit the speed limiter many times on my snows. Dunlop winter sport 3ds. or the likes. any high performance snow should be fine.

Your dealer contact is an ignoramus. EVERY car ever made, up to and including a Bugatti Veyron, can use properly-sized winter tires. If you search, there are even on-line reviews of the S8 where the factory has provided testers with winter tires.

A few potential outcomes - First you could be correct - Ignoramus may be the call. $126K car but no knowledge of how to sell it.

Two - they want to sell the base A8 (or an S4)

Three - I should buy a Veyron. What is the headroom like in that car?

Luckily, it's available in a Spider version, with unlimited headroom.

Can I ask just how aggressive? I'm considering buying one myself. Thanks.

Usually the dealer and I split the margin over invoice as half discount for me and half profit for them. In this case they are offering me a $6K discount and they would keep $3K profit. Others may be able to get a lower price, maybe some dealers don't discount S8's, I don't know - I have bought a lot of cars from this dealer snd this seems fair to me. I don't work them for every dime, sometimes Audi has loyalty money on the table as well. The car is awesome, I just don't know if I'll get it due to driving it all year round in New England.

I suggest that you talk to a knowledgeable dealer. Of course one can fit winter compound tires with OEM 20's on the S8. In Europe winter compound tires are legally mandated for cars in the winter. Not sure exactly the dates they must be on cars, but I believe it is from sometime in Nov to April. You definitely do not want to be on summer compound tires when it gets much below 40 because the tire gets harder and even in dry conditions has much less than optimal grip.
