Well, try following and then notice site for second or third hit ...
Let me google that for you
Also notice in search results you can check VIN at Audi USA site for any open recalls on vehicle.

that's what I wanted, not necessarily a decoder for the VIN itself, but something that would provide the basic build sheet for the car with all options but I appreciate the responses. bought the car today anyway so I guess it just doesn't matter!

Find an old thread where someone has access to the Audi database and can type in a VIN. There is a guy who does that on D3 board IIRC.
Get a copy of build sticker from either maintenance manual or spare tire area, or get someone to send you a pic of it. Online w/ a search you can find a list of most all the related 3 digit/letter codes involved.

at this point it's irrelevant, already know what's on it but thanks. have to figure out the adaptive cruise now. probably will never use it! options always sound cool but then you don't use them

Once you drive with adaptive cruise, you don't want to go back to standard cruise. Where I am in the over crowded, over trafficked Silicon Valley and NorCal, standard cruise is almost useless on the freeways with the level of traffic and constantly varying speeds. In more trafficked areas you want to get a feel for how close to dial in the following distance from the choices to minimize lane cutters. If you do mountain freeway driving, good to know the few conditions in can get faked out if you use it--decreasing radius highway curves overtaking a big slow truck in a neighboring lane just ahead is the toughest one probably. The Audi is pretty good at reading even that one, though I have my foot nearby the gas when I see that scenario to override it if it gets confused.
