I got the Adaptive Cruise (ACC) Unavailable on my loaded 2019 A8 in June 2023. It's happened to me before during heavy fog, rain, etc but it always worked again after drying out. This time it did not. I bought it to the dealer and they found DTC C12EBF1 which is pointed to the Laserscanner which is center mounted above the license plate. I talked with a knowledgeable Audi Technician. He was very patient and told me the following:
DTC C12EBF1 is covered by TSB 2053776/7 dated Dec 18, 2020 (attached and also know as MC-10185263-0001 from this site). The TSB indicates that a software update is needed but NO recalibration. They did the SW update and the ACC was working again just fine. One month later the same Adaptive Cruise (ACC) Unavailable fault C12EBF1 came up. Now they say that since the SW update was already performed, the repair manual says to Recalibrate the ACC. They called Audi and was told this is not covered under CPO as it is an adjustment (for $800).
I also attached the pages relative to the Laserscanner from the Official Audi Self Study documentation for reference.
Question: In my old D4 Audi I was able to use my ODB11 to see what the "misalignment" angles were and then adjust them manually to within spec. A bit of a PIA but it worked. Is that possible with the D5 via the ODB11 ?
I get the feeling that I should dump the car since it has 85K miles on it, CPO ends in Oct and I may have to payout $7-10K a year in maintenance like my old D4 Audi when it crossed 100K miles.
Thanks for sharing this information. It is not fair that Audi will not cover this under the CPO coverage, and I would personally call Audi about this. I just do not see how they can claim this as a regular maintenance item. I do not recall seeing this adjustment anywhere in the recommended service schedule.
I drew the error that Adaptive Cruise was unavailable. I was due for my 60,000 mile service anyway, so I mentioned it to the dealer. They indicated that when the roads get really hot, the laser sacanner can return false errors. A software update was required to fix it. I believe it was the same TSB as above - Audi has known about this issue since 2020. Anyway, they wanted to charge me $160 to do the update out of warranty. I told them that made no sense - this was a design flaw, not a part failure or something. After a bit of back and forth, the dealer agreed to cover it for free. It's working now.
DallasDave, that is not the same error we are talking about. The message you have is when the car's database does not include roads so it can't predict curves, etc. The cruise still works fine in that instance, just no predictive control.
